CoC Mission | "To promote secure and affordable housing for residents of Fayette County who are homeless or who have been identified as being at risk of becoming homeless." |
| History | | The Community Action Commission of Fayette County (CAC) received its first HUD McKinney funds in 1990 for a 3-year grant for Transitional Housing. CAC has received these funds ever since. As part of the renewal process for the McKinney funds in the mid-1990s, the agency had to describe its housing coordination activities, which HUD called a Continuum of Care. CAC responded by describing its attendance at various housing related meetings held in the county. As the Continuum of Care became a more formal requirement, a separate coalition was set up specifically to meet this requirement. The early Coalition consisted of the CAC’s homeless and housing staff, representatives from the Department of Job & Family Services, and a staff member from the Housing Authority. These members met monthly at a local restaurant and conducted very informal meetings. The coalition expanded as the CoC guidelines from HUD and the Ohio Department of Development were developed. Over time the membership has grown to include several organizations. CAC remains the driving force behind the CoC, because it is the only agency in the county that receives funds through HUD’s Continuum of Care program and the Ohio Department of Development’s Homeless RFP and Housing RFP programs. CAC is also the largest provider of homeless services and affordable housing development in the county. |
| Point in time count | The point in time count is a mandatory survey that is done to estimate the number of homeless individuals in our county on one given night. This is an attempt to define the scope and magnitude of homelessness on a local level. This data is then collected by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and extrapolated for the whole country. | The data collection is done on a local level by volunteers and services providers. The collection takes place in the last week of January each year. All individuals counted must be staying in shelters, transitional housing, public paid hotel rooms, and/or living on the streets, in cars, or any other place not meant for habitation. Volunteers scour the county looking for evidence of homeless individuals and/or families and ask those individuals basic demographic questions and find out how they became homeless. In order to stop homelessness we must be able to identify social and economical factors that are causing it. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Gaye Huffman at (740)333-4493. |
