 | Our mission is to enhance the quality of life by providing a comprehensive and dynamic program for children and families, to empower and encourage movement towards self-sufficiency and independence, and to incorporate Head Start Core Values in all our lives and in the lives of those we touch. We value children, families, and our professional staff. We foster creativity and innovation to make a difference in the lives of children and families we serve, as together we learn and grow each day. |

1965 | Head Start began as a Summer Program. It's main focus was on the social development of children.
| | 1970 | Parents began having rights and responsibilities associated with their children participating in Head Start.
| | 1972 | Head Start was mandated to set aside 10% of enrollment for children with disabilities.
| | 1990 | First state funded expansion in financial support of Head Start. Ohio now leads the nation with $100 MILLION in funding and 60,000 children being served.
| | 1998 | Reauthorization of Head Start with the most massive changes to date: Purpose moved from social competence to the promotion of school readiness, emphasis on literacy, numeracy, fine/large motor skills, social/emotional competency, health and safety, nutrition, and child mental health. For profit organizations may compete with nonprofits. Set competitive salaries for teachers and staff, requires one teacher with an Associates to be in each class room, & required full day/year services for families.
| | 1999 | Programs mandated to name a literacy specialist.
